Are you interested in taking advantage of funding opportunities from the Helping to End Addiction Long-term® Initiative, or NIH HEAL Initiative®, to conduct research that may improve pain treatment options?

The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) is delighted to collaborate with the NIH HEAL Initiative to highlight the following open funding opportunities from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to speed the development and implementation of scientific solutions to the national opioid public health crisis.

  • HEAL Initiative: NIH-DOD-VA Pain Management Collaboratory – Pragmatic and/or Implementation Science Demonstration Projects ((UG3/UH3) Clinical Trial Required)
    RFA-AT-24-011
This NIH HEAL Initiative notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) is soliciting applications to conduct efficient, large-scale pragmatic clinical trials and/or implementation science demonstration projects within the infrastructure of the NIH-DOD-VA Pain Management Collaboratory (PMC). Investigators will study nonopioid approaches to the management of pain and other comorbid conditions, including complementary and integrative health approaches used alone and in combination with standard care. Research will be conducted within health care systems serving veterans, military personnel, and their families. The application receipt date is November 7, 2024.
  • HEAL Initiative: Coordinated Approaches to Pain Care in Health Care Systems (UG3/UH3 - Clinical Trial Optional)
    RFA-NS-24-041
This funding opportunity is intended to embed the coordinated care model under study into the primary care health care delivery system of applicant institutions. Coordinated pain care approaches proposed for study are expected to include interventions from multiple disciplines and should aim to improve pain management based on the biopsychosocial model of pain. Study teams are expected to include implementation scientists and health care providers from multiple disciplines. The application receipt date is November 7, 2024.

A preapplication webinar was held on September 12, 2024, and the summary of the webinar is available online. (Scroll to the bottom of the page for a link where you can download the summary.)
  • HEAL Initiative: Pain Research Enhancement Program (PREP) (R15 Clinical Trial Optional)
    RFA-AT-25-001
The purpose of this NIH HEAL Initiative program is to foster new partnerships between R15-eligible institutions and other U.S. domestic institutions to pursue basic and mechanistic pain research. The specific goals of the awards are to: 1) support basic and mechanistic pain research from R15-eligible undergraduate-focused serving institutions, health professional schools, or graduate schools; 2) promote integrated, interdisciplinary research partnerships between principal investigators from R15-eligible institutions and investigators from U.S. domestic institutions; and 3) enhance the pain research environment at the R15-eligible institution for health professional students, undergraduate students, and/or graduate students through active engagement in pain research. The receipt dates are November 19, 2024; October 28, 2025; and October 27, 2026. Please view the Frequently Asked Questions page or contact us if you have questions.

We hope this blog post provides a glimpse of NIH HEAL Initiative opportunities that may be of interest to NCCIH stakeholders. We encourage interested investigators to review the full NOFOs published in the NIH Guide to Grants and Contracts and consider reaching out to the scientific program contact listed in the specific request for applications.
