National Advisory Council for Complementary and Integrative Health (NACCIH)

The National Advisory Council for Complementary and Integrative Health (NACCIH) is charged with the responsibility of advising, consulting with, and making recommendations to the NCCIH director on matters relating to the research activities and functions of the Center. The role and responsibilities of the council members include secondary review of grant applications in light of the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) scientific program priorities and program balance. In addition, NACCIH reviews and provides clearance for concepts for new research initiatives.

The council consists of 18 voting members. In addition, there are five non-voting ex officio members: the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services secretary; the National Institutes of Health director; the NCCIH director; the chief medical director of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs; and the assistant secretary of defense for health affairs (or other designee) of the U.S. Department of Defense. Appointed members serve for up to 4-year terms.

The minutes of the most recent meetings are available online.

Concept Clearances
In open session, Council conducts concept reviews of potential research initiatives. These concepts originate from the scientific community, constituency organizations, and Congress. NCCIH seeks the Council’s advice on these concepts for planning purposes of potential future initiatives and funding opportunities.
