Speaker Biosketch for When Experts Disagree: The Art of Medical Decision Making

Dr. Jerome Groopman, a hematologist and oncologist, holds the Dina and Raphael Recanati Chair of Medicine at the Harvard Medical School and is chief of experimental medicine at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He received his M.D. from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and served his internship and residency in internal medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital, followed by specialty fellowships at the University of California, Los Angeles, and the Children’s Hospital/Sidney Farber Cancer Center, Boston.

His research has focused on blood development, cancer, and AIDS. Dr. Groopman writes regularly about biology and medicine for lay audiences and has also authored many published editorials on policy issues. His books include The Measure of Our Days, The Anatomy of Hope, How Doctors Think, and Your Medical Mind, the latter coauthored with his spouse, Dr. Pamela Hartzband.

Dr. Pamela Hartzband is an assistant professor at the Harvard Medical School and attending physician in the Division of Endocrinology at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. An endocrinologist, she specializes in disorders of the thyroid, adrenal, and pituitary glands, and in women’s health.

Dr. Hartzband received her M.D. from the Harvard Medical School, and served her internship and residency in internal medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital and specialty fellowships at the University of California, Los Angeles. Her publications include articles in The New England Journal of Medicine on the impact of electronic records, uniform practice guidelines, monetary incentives, and the Internet on the culture of clinical care. In conjunction with Dr. Groopman, Dr. Hartzband is a bimonthly columnist for ACP Internist, the publication of the American College of Physicians.
