Speaker Biosketch for Manipulating the Pain

Deyo

Richard A. Deyo, M.D., M.P.H., is the Kaiser Permanente Endowed Professor of Evidence-Based Medicine at Oregon Health and Science University, a general internist, and a researcher. He received his medical degree from the Penn State College of Medicine and completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio. Dr. Deyo received his M.P.H. from the University of Washington, where he later was appointed professor of medicine and director of the Center for Cost and Outcomes Research.

Dr. Deyo has a longstanding research interest in measuring patient function, involving patients in clinical decisions, and managing low-back pain. Recently, he has also studied excessive or inappropriate use of medical technology. He cochaired the NIH Pain Consortium’s Task Force on Research Standards for Chronic Low Back Pain, and was the principal investigator on the Agency for Health Care Research and Quality Patient Outcomes Research Team on low-back pain as well as a member of that agency’s guideline panel for acute low-back problems. Dr. Deyo is deputy editor of the journal Spine and an editorial board member of the Back Review Group of the Cochrane Collaboration.
