I want to alert you to an exciting 1-day research symposium on chronic pain organized by the NCCIH Pain Working Group.

Chronic Pain: The Science of Complementary and Integrative Health Approaches, sponsored by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) in collaboration with the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research, and the NIH Pain Consortium, will take place on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 in advance of the World Congress on Pain. You can register for this symposium even if you’re not attending the Congress.

The symposium will convene internationally renowned scientists presenting on the following cross-cutting topics:

• The past, present, and future of natural product research and pain management, focusing on our current understanding of the ascending and descending neural mechanisms by which different natural products may contribute to analgesia. Confirmed speakers include Jeremiah Osteen, Ph.D. (Vertex Pharmaceuticals); Andrea G. Hohmann, Ph.D. (Indiana University); Ru-Rong Ji, Ph.D. (Duke University Medical Center); Susan Masino, Ph.D. (Trinity College); and Edward Boyer, M.D., Ph.D. (Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School).
• The mechanisms by which a variety of mind and body approaches may modulate pain. Confirmed speakers include M. Catherine Bushnell, Ph.D. (NCCIH); Fadel Zeidan, Ph.D. (Wake Forest School of Medicine); Maiken Nedergaard, M.D., D.M.Sc. (University of Copenhagen); and Vitaly Napadow, Ph.D., L.Ac. (Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School).
• Translational potential for complementary and integrative approaches for individual-based chronic pain management. Confirmed speakers include William Maixner, D.D.S., Ph.D. (Duke University); Tor Wager, Ph.D. (University of Colorado, Boulder); Ralf Baron, M.D., Ph.D. (University of Kiel); and Susmita Kashikar-Zuck, Ph.D. (Cincinnati Children's Hospital).

The symposium will conclude with patient perspectives and general discussion.
