NCCIH Research Blog

On Friday, May 13, the National Advisory Council for Complementary and Integrative Health (NACCIH) will hold its third meeting for Fiscal Year 2022. If you are a National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) grantee, potential grant applicant, member of the public, or other stakeholder, we invite you to the Open Session (view the agenda).

The livestream will be from 11:40 a.m. to 4:20 p.m. ET on NIH VideoCast, where it will later be archived. Registration is not necessary. The Open Session offers news and updates on NCCIH’s activities, policies, and funding priorities, and often includes guest speakers (read more about the NACCIH). 

On May 13, we look forward to hearing the following presentations in the Open Session, which will then be discussed by the Council: 

• The report of NCCIH Director Dr. Helene M. Langevin on NCCIH’s news, plans, and activities since the previous NACCIH meeting (January 2022).
• Dr. Rena N. D’Souza, the director of the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), on her Institute’s research priorities in temporomandibular disorders and shared interests with NCCIH.
• A mini-symposium on “Clinical Trials To Address Stress in Different Contexts: What Makes Trials Impactful,” featuring as panelists: 
  • Dr. Judith T. Moskowitz, professor of medical social sciences, Northwestern University
  • Dr. Zev Schuman-Olivier, director of addiction research and the Center for Mindfulness and Compassion, Cambridge Health Alliance, and assistant professor in psychiatry, Harvard Medical School
  • Dr. Michael Christopher, professor and director of clinical training, School of Graduate Psychology, Pacific University
    
    The links above are to an NCCIH-funded research project of each panelist on life stress. Dr. Wendy Weber, chief of the Clinical Research Branch in the NCCIH Division of Extramural Research (DER), will give opening remarks. 
• Three research concepts proposed for the Council’s clearance: 
  • “Validation Studies of Analytical Methods for Dietary Supplement Constituents,” by Dr. Adam Kuszak, health science administrator and director of the Analytical Methods and Reference Materials Program, NIH Office of Dietary Supplements
  • “Research Networks To Promote Innovative Mechanistic and Translational Studies of Sickle Cell Disease Pain,” by Dr. Inna Belfer, program director, NCCIH DER 
  • “Building Cross-Cutting Research Network(s) To Promote Multidisciplinary Mechanistic Studies of Music and Health,” by Dr. Wen Chen, chief, Basic and Mechanistic Research, NCCIH DER

As this meeting will be entirely virtual, comments for the Public Comment session of the Open Session will be accepted in writing only, based on NIH policy. Public comments (up to 750 words) will be accepted for 15 days after the meeting, emailed to khalsap@mail.nih.gov by Saturday, May 28. They will be added to the meeting minutes and posted on the NACCIH portal within 90 days of the meeting.
