F’s, T’s, and K’s can sound like alphabet soup to National Institutes of Health (NIH) outsiders. So what are the differences among them, and which option can support my stage of training and career development? What actually happens during an NIH grant review process? What are NCCIH’s funding priorities and why do they matter to my grant application? How can I get my student loans repaid while doing research? How do I plan for a successful research career?

If you’ve been wondering about any of these topics or other training and career development questions, I encourage you to attend “Developing Your Research Career: NCCIH Training and Career Development Opportunities,” a Pre-Congress Workshop at the International Congress on Integrative Medicine and Health (ICIMH) on Thursday, May 8, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to noon in Baltimore, MD. As the Training Director at NCCIH, I planned this workshop to provide an overview of NIH training and career development funding opportunities, tips for successful grant submissions and review, and advice on key aspects of planning a successful research career with NIH funding. The workshop will include presentations by NCCIH program and review staff, as well as an interactive mock study section review panel of NCCIH-funded investigators (Drs. Gloria Yeh, Jeffrey Dusek, John Denninger, and Peter Wayne). Attendees will also have the opportunity to interact with these seasoned investigators and NCCIH program and review staff in small-group breakout sessions to discuss common application mistakes, and when and how to interact with NCCIH staff to develop a research proposal. Other topics to be discussed are planning a research career timeline, overcoming common roadblocks, and finding good mentors. There will be ample opportunity to discuss other topics as determined by the attendees.
